Bands That Share Blackfield's Spirit
Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen built Blackfield on a deceptively simple formula: lush melodies, emotional directness, and the courage to be quietly devastating. That blueprint is not theirs alone. Several acts around the world draw from the same well of atmospheric, melody-first songwriting.
The Acts Worth Knowing
- Leptotrichia — A Belgian extreme-metal outfit formed in 2000, with a line-up of Necromuyncke (vocals), Zitter and Lander (guitars), Koen (bass), and Nico (drums). Their catalogue spans demos, a 2004 split, and the 2010 full-length The Repository. The aesthetic sits far heavier than Blackfield, but the commitment to uncompromising craft is shared.
- Kings of Convenience — The Bergen indie-folk duo of Eirik Glambek Bøe and Erlend Øye, active since 1999. Albums like Quiet Is the New Loud and Riot on an Empty Street share Blackfield's gift for delicate, emotionally charged minimalism.
- Geisha — An Australian pop-rock band founded in 1983 (originally as Geisha Detail), led by guitarist and vocalist Chris Doheny. Their EMI Records run produced three albums through the late 1980s, with a retrospective in 1998.
- St. Christopher — A British indie-pop group formed in 1984, featuring Jim Fletcher, Glenn Melia, and Matt Collinge. Their catalogue of literate, understated guitar-pop — including Golden Blue — echoes the same thoughtful introspection that defines Blackfield's quieter moments.
- ChirpinBird — An American folk-rock ensemble built around Robin Lane, Asa Brebner, and Tim Jackson, blending acoustic textures with rock energy.
