Blackfield music has managed to draw a significant attention due to its proficient organization showcased by a collaboration of various artists who specialize in different roles. The band currently features popular artists including Steven Wilson, Seffy Efrati, Aviv Geffen, Tomer Z, and Eran Mitelman. Blackfield’s music features lead vocals, keyboards, lead guitar, bass guitar, drums, piano, and percussion with its sound described as metallic, pop, prong, and indie rock.
The melody of Blackfield’s music is enhanced by the lead vocalist, also known as the lead singer or lead vocals. The lead vocalist by definition is that one person in a band whose voice protrudes most among the voices of the other band members. Blackfield’s lead singer is responsible for either leading the vocal ensemble or setting against the ensemble as the presiding sound. The prominent artists who play the role of lead vocals include Steven Wilson and Aviv Geffen. Steven Wilson, in most cases, plays the role of the front man in Blackfield where he takes the main vocal part. Another proficient lead vocalist for the Blackfield Band is Aviv Geffen who was the co-founder of the band and has up to date contributed significantly to sustaining the name of the band.
The lead guitar is another integral constituent of Blackfield’s melody. This part plays the melody lines, guitar solos, instrumental fill passages, and from time to time, plays some riffs inside a song structure. Steven Wilson is currently the artist known to play the lead guitar with Aviv Geffen and Seffy Efrati known to play the guitars. The lead guitar plays the double-stops or the single-note-based lines.
Keyboards are some of the secrets behind the melody of Blackfield music. Blackfields keyboard instruments include the piano. These are used by the band to regulate phrasing, dynamics, articulation, and shading among other depression elements. The Blackfield’s artists operating the piano and keyboard include Steve Wilson, Aviv Geffen, and Eran Mitelman.
The Drum Kit is another critical instrument that contributes to the attractive melody of Blackfield music. It includes a collection of drums and percussion instruments such as cymbals. The kit comprises of drums categorized as Hornbostel-Sachs, Idiophones, and membranophones. Currently, the drum kit of the Blackfield band is played by Tomer Z who also specializes in percussion.
Admittedly, the excellent division of roles in the Backfield band has immensely contributed to its amazing blend of melodies. With each band member specializing in their various areas, the band is identified as one that is an all-inclusive. As stated by Geffen, Blackfield’s sound is described as very melodic. He further went ahead to state that he doesn’t allow Steven to play over two-minute solos.
Blackfield’s sound can be described as metal, indie rock, prong, or pop. Despite Steven Wilson running various projects and bands, he still manages to maintain a consistent tone. His album usually maintains the penchant for the moody, melancholic, rock amalgamated with numerous progressive elements. With Wilson’s melancholic mindset, it was unclear how he would manage to carry the mindset for the case of Blackfield Band. Blackfield provides an alternative, more sweet-sounding reminiscent of Porcupine Tree’s album of 2000 titled Lightbulb Sun.
Blackfield’s sound can also be described as an extra stripped-down version of the Porcupine Tree’s music that focuses more on emotional weight and simpler songwriting in addition to lots of musical layers and less on instrumentation. The collaboration of the musical stars, Aviv Geffen and Steven Wilson has resulted in a more continuous melancholic side of Wilson and the pop side of Geffen. The album is a mixture of sorts. For example, the “Open Mind” comprises of many Pink Floyd influence by the lush vocal harmonies and acoustic guitar work which begun it. In a nutshell, Blackfield’s album maintains a profound diversity. Wilson has also ensured that Blackfield’s work comes coated in multiple layers of instrumentation to create the atmosphere at the climax of certain songs. For instance, the song “Cloudy Now” is based on a somber mood but as it tends to come to an end it bursts all of a sudden into distorted vocals.
